Short answer: no, incognito does not normally hide your IP
When you visit a website, the site generally needs a network address to send data back to you. Your browser's private or incognito window changes how the browser stores local session data; it does not automatically reroute your internet traffic through a different network.
That distinction matters. A private window can help reduce traces on the device after the session ends, while your public IP can still be visible to the websites and online services you connect to.
What incognito mode actually does
Different browsers use different names—Incognito, Private Browsing, InPrivate—but the basic idea is similar: create a temporary browsing session that is separated from the normal profile.
- Browsing history from the private session is generally not added to the normal history list.
- Temporary cookies and site data are usually separated from the normal profile and removed when the private session is closed.
- Form entries and session state are less likely to remain in the normal profile.
- Existing downloads and files you deliberately save can still remain on the device.
This is valuable local privacy. It is especially useful on a shared computer or when you want to sign into a second account without mixing sessions.
What incognito mode does not hide
Private browsing is not the same thing as network anonymity. A website can still receive network-level information required for the connection. Your internet service provider or the organization controlling the network may also be able to observe that traffic is being exchanged, depending on the network and protocol.
If you sign in to an account while using incognito, the service can still associate activity performed while signed in with that account. Private mode does not make an authenticated account anonymous.
The same principle applies to browser fingerprinting. Even without persistent cookies, a site may observe characteristics such as screen size, language, time zone, graphics behavior, installed capabilities and other signals. A private window does not automatically eliminate all of those signals.
Why people confuse local privacy with network privacy
The word “private” sounds broader than it really is. Browser private mode mostly controls what the browser keeps locally. IP masking is a routing problem: traffic must leave through a different network endpoint if you want the destination to see a different public IP.
How can your public IP be changed or masked?
Network tools can route traffic through another server before it reaches the destination. The website then normally sees the public address of that exit point rather than the original connection address.
- A VPN routes supported traffic through a VPN server.
- A proxy can forward particular types of traffic.
- Tor routes traffic through multiple relays and exits to the public internet.
- A multi-hop privacy network can use several separate routing nodes before reaching the destination.
Each option has different trust, performance and privacy trade-offs. Changing an IP address also does not automatically stop account-based tracking, browser fingerprinting or every other way a service can recognize a user.
How to check what your browser is exposing
Do not rely only on the label on a browser mode. Test it. Open a normal window and note your visible public IP. Then open the privacy mode or network feature you want to test and check again. If the public address is identical, that mode has not hidden the IP.
You can also test WebRTC behavior, cookies, local history and fingerprinting separately. Privacy is easier to understand when each layer is measured independently instead of being compressed into one vague “private” badge.
